Andy provided abackground into how Lewes had protected and maintained traditions unlike other parts of Britain. The historical context in which the barons had managed to obtain concessions from King Henry III which eventually led to the formation of parliament was also covered. Pictures of several properties were shown including the castle, the 15th century book shop, Anne of Cleeves house and churches. Andy provided geographic information about Lewes being hilly and divided by the river Ouse and listed several notable people who lived there one being Virginia Woolf. The outcome of Mary I becoming queen and trying to turn the country back to Catholicismwas explained together with the martyrdom of 17 residents of the town who refused to abandon their protestant faith. This act is remembered as part of the bonfire night tradition re-enacted every year. The 7 bonfire societies were outlined Lewes Borough, Cliffe, Commercial Square, Nevill Juvenile, South St, Southover and Waterloo. They compete to sell tickets for their display of which visitors totalling 40-50,000 have a choice of 6 to choose from before the proceedings conclude with a grand united procession apart fromCliffe.
